About Paul

Paul Broadbent
The Teacher
The Author

I began writing while still working full-time as a deputy head teacher and later as an advisory teacher in Lincolnshire. It was hard to do both. With two small children just starting school and my wife eager to return to teaching it was a great chance to go part-time as a maths advisor and have a bit more time for writing while enjoying being the main carer for our children.

By having more time to write, I gained a sought-after reputation for meeting tight deadlines, which meant I was offered more writing! My co-author and mentor Peter Patilla then decided to retire and passed many contacts my way. Suddenly I was a full-time author and the non-writing side of being self-employed was piling high – book-keeping, tax forms….aargh! At this stage Ann, my wife stepped in to help and we have worked together full-time ever since. Ann not only deals with all the finance and contracts, but is first proof editor and writes all the answers. In addition she manages the development of the resources we produce ourselves. It’s also great to have someone to bounce ideas off – writing is a solitary occupation.

I also enjoy the other strand to my work – supporting, teaching and inspiring teachers in staff meetings, in the classroom and individually with subject leaders. I’ve never really left the classroom. I’ve had various contracts with Lincolnshire to provide school support and I presented the MaST programme in conjunction with Northampton University.

I’ve also delivered many courses throughout the UK and internationally, from Key-note speaker to over 400 teachers at Glasgow Celtic football club, to day courses for clusters or individual schools.

I recently worked at the University of Warwick Centre for Professional Education as a Senior Teaching Fellow. This was an enjoyable year's secondment as a maths and professional studies tutor for PGCE and School Direct trainees.

I am now concentrating on supporting schools with their planning and teaching through this website. As well as the planning menu resources I also have a huge bank of resources and ideas that have built up over the years. The aim is to put all this together for schools to use, on this web-site.
