I worked in a school near Newcastle recently and it was interesting to see their approach to pre- and post- Afl questions. It might provide a useful way forward for you.
The children answered a selection of the Afl questions I provide for each unit, with the questions stuck into their books at the start of the unit. Of course, at this stage, they couldn't answer them all. Then at the end of the unit they tried the Afl questions again (they were stuck in again at the end of the unit of work) and ticked the ones they could now answer.
It had an empowering effect on the children as they could clearly identify their own learning achievements and see the progress they had made.
