Maths football game - for Euro 2012

Wednesday, 13 June 2012
I know many of you are planning for the Olympics at the moment, but don’t forget to make the most of the football as well. The excitement of Euro 2012 is building up and I’m sure a lot of you are displaying the group league tables in the classroom so they can be updated by the children – it’s something I did for every sports event.

Statistics from sporting tournaments are perfect for all sorts of maths activities, and I’m impressed with the official UEFA site for their statistics page.

It is full of data that can be used for discussions or to generate problem-solving starting points. Here’s a few to start you off:

Do the teams that have the higher percentage of possession score the most goals?

Do the teams that foul a lot also get fouled the most?

Here is a football game for you to print out and use in your classroom.  Use it to practise multiplication tables, odd and evens and logical thinking skills.

This football game is part of a set of six that can be ordered directly.
