Is there a way of knowing which steps within the Unit Plans should be taught mentally?

We would like a clear picture of the mental strategies taught.
I think what you are asking for are the mental calculations strategies to be clearly identified within each unit. At the moment these are part of each unit to help break down the PoS and make sure the small steps are clear.

You wondered if the Essential Skills list was written for this, but it wasn't intended to cover all the Y6 PoS. I wrote this with a group of schools who wanted a set of maths skills that would give a minimum entitlement for all the children to attempt to be secure and fluent in by the time they leave Y6. So we based it on life skills and basic skills that the lowest attainers could hope to achieve, not looking at the PoS for this. Some schools are using the Essential Skills as the content list for an extra daily 10 minute mental maths session to make sure the 'basics' are well-practised.

A mental calculation 'sign-post' for each year with the strategies to use with the children would be a useful resource, so I will have a go at trying to put this information out clearly - possibly in the unit plan format or maybe using the progress tracker format so teachers can track when they have taught each strategy and when children have mastered it.

It may not be a particularly quick job, but I will work on it.

There is are new Mental Arithmetic Progression  files for each year. These were added June 2015 in direct response to this teacher's question.
